ED Shadow Over Congress’s Valmiki Leadership

The Directorate of Enforcement turned up at Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi’s office on Wednesday, rummaging through files and cabinets in a sweep that sent ripples across Karnataka’s political landscape.

It isn’t the first time the Congress’s Valmiki‑community figures have felt the heat. Back in July 2024, MLA B. Nagendra was taken into custody by the ED in connection with the Valmiki Corporation money‑laundering case; the agency later filed a prosecution complaint and the CBI even issued a chargesheet.

Then there’s former minister and MLA K.N. Rajanna, who was questioned in 2019 when he headed the Karnataka State Cooperative Apex Bank. He brushed it off as a routine check on loan transactions, insisting it wasn’t a personal probe.

Among the three, Jarkiholi is the political heavyweight. He commands a sizable organisational base in northern Karnataka and is often billed as the Congress’s most visible Scheduled‑Tribe face in the state.

The timing, however, feels especially prickly. The BJP has just kicked off a high‑profile padayatra to Ballari, openly targeting the Congress government. The ED’s latest move could hand the BJP a tidy talking point – that the Congress’s Valmiki leadership is riddled with legal troubles.

If the investigation widens, the party risks a leadership vacuum in a community that has traditionally been a pillar of its vote bank. That vacuum could be hard to fill, and the narrative of vulnerability might stick.

For the Congress, the challenge is two‑fold: weather the legal storm while stopping the BJP’s story from gaining traction among Valmiki voters. It’s a delicate balancing act, and every new development will be watched closely.
