Many folks in and around Gilroy, California, got an unexpected jolt this morning, courtesy of a series of earthquakes that rippled through the region. The most notable among them, a rather significant 4.0 magnitude tremor, struck shortly before the sun even thought about rising, creating a buzzing conversation online and among early risers.

This wasn't an isolated incident, mind you. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), this 4.0 quake was just one of several that made their presence felt. The largest one, occurring around 2:40 a.m. local time, was centered about 10 miles east-southeast of Gilroy, near Ridgemark. You know, the kind of shake that really gets your attention, rattling pictures on walls or giving you a quick, unsettling shimmy in bed.

Following that main jolt, the ground continued to grumble with a few smaller, less intense aftershocks.
