The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant warning, forecasting widespread rainfall across the state, including the bustling metropolis of Kolkata, precisely when the grandest festival is at its peak.

This meteorological development stems from a brewing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which is poised to intensify into a depression and bring a wet spell that could alter traditional festive plans.

According to the latest IMD reports, a well-marked low-pressure area has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal and is expected to move initially northwestwards, concentrating into a depression.

Subsequently, it is likely to recurve and move north-northeastwards, making its way towards the West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts. This trajectory places the entire region, particularly the coastal and adjoining districts, directly in the path of substantial rainfall.

The critical period for this weather phenomenon is anticipated to coincide with the heart of Durga Puja celebrations, specifically from Saptami (October 21) through Navami (October 23).

This timing is crucial, as these days are traditionally marked by extensive pandal hopping, grand cultural events, and mass public gatherings, all of which could be significantly hampered by persistent rain.

Forecasters predict heavy to very heavy rainfall for coastal districts such as North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and East Midnapore.

Kolkata, along with other districts in Gangetic West Bengal, is expected to experience moderate to heavy showers. The IMD has also warned of increasing wind speeds, especially along the coast, which could exacerbate the challenges for outdoor festivities and temporary structures erected for the pujas.

Organizers of community pujas and individual celebrants are advised to prepare for adverse weather conditions.
