Dramatic Pursuit Ends in Arrests After Extortion Shooting Rocks Surrey

The quiet calm of Surrey's Newton neighbourhood was rudely shattered early Tuesday morning when a shooting, believed to be connected to an ongoing extortion scheme, sent a man to the hospital and sparked a dramatic police chase across the city. It all unfolded rather quickly, you know, a stark reminder of the challenges our communities sometimes face.

Authorities received the initial call around 2:30 a.m., reporting gunfire in the 8100-block of 122 Street. When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered a man suffering from a gunshot wound. Thankfully, and this is truly good news considering the circumstances, his injuries were described as non-life-threatening. One can only imagine the shock and fear he must have experienced.

It didn't take long for the investigation to ramp up. Police quickly identified a black Mercedes-Benz SUV as the getaway vehicle, which, it seems, was attempting to make a swift escape from the area. What followed was a determined pursuit by officers, weaving through the early morning streets of Surrey. The chase ultimately culminated in a collision near 176 Street and 16 Avenue, where the fleeing Mercedes-Benz crashed.

Immediately following the crash, three individuals who had been inside the SUV were taken into custody. It was a swift resolution to what could have been a much more drawn-out situation. Surrey RCMP confirmed these arrests, and the Emergency Response Team (ERT) was also deployed, highlighting the serious nature of the incident and the precautions taken by law enforcement.

While the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was, naturally, notified about the shooting, the lead on this case remains with the Surrey RCMP’s General Investigation Section (GIS). This is primarily because, as mentioned, the victim's injuries are not considered life-threatening.
