DMK MLA G R Markendiyan Arrested Over Threatening Remarks Toward CM C Joseph Vijay

Chennai – On Monday the police nabbed DMK MLA G R Markendiyan, accusing him of hurling defamatory and threatening words at Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. The arrest didn’t happen in a quiet office; it followed a noisy complaint lodged by a functionary of the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) after a rally on July 18.

According to the FIR, Markendiyan responded to the chief minister’s remark about his “search for father” – a side‑comment that many interpreted as a veiled jab at DMK supremo M K Stalin after Stalin’s loss in Kolathur. Markendiyan supposedly said, “In the Assembly, the Chief Minister says he is searching for the father. Shameless Chief Minister. We will take care of you in the Assembly. He says he will lock the doors of the Assembly. If he locks them, his bones will be crushed. Let him lock the Assembly and see.”

Those words, raw and heated, landed him in the tuticorin Superintendent of Police’s office, where he is currently being questioned. The police say the statements crossed the line from political rhetoric into a direct threat, prompting swift action.

Unsurprisingly, DMK supporters didn’t take the news lying down. Within hours of the arrest, crowds gathered outside the police station, chanting slogans and demanding his release. The scene was a mix of anger, confusion, and the usual street‑level drama that follows any high‑profile political crackdown.

This isn’t the first time a DMK legislator has found himself on the wrong side of the law this month. Earlier, Tiruchendur MLA Anitha Radhakrishnan was also detained over remarks aimed at the chief minister. She secured bail and walked free the same day, but the episode added another layer to the simmering tension between the ruling party and its critics.

While Markendiyan’s fate hangs in the balance, the episode underscores the fragile balance in Tamil Nadu’s political arena – a place where words can quickly become weapons, and where a single comment at a public meeting can trigger a chain reaction of arrests, protests, and endless media coverage.
