Dense Fog Blankets East Bay Valleys: Drive with Extreme Caution!

The National Weather Service (NWS) is officially telling us to be extra, extra careful, as they've issued a Dense Fog Advisory for the region.

This isn't just your typical morning mist, folks. We're talking about visibility dropping down to a quarter-mile, sometimes even less. It's the kind of fog that just swallows everything up, making even familiar roads feel totally alien and, frankly, quite dangerous. The advisory is in effect right now and is expected to last until Wednesday midday, so plan your travels accordingly.

Areas particularly affected include those beautiful, usually sun-drenched valleys like Livermore, Danville, Walnut Creek, Concord, and San Ramon. If you live, work, or commute through any of these spots, or similar low-lying areas, you really need to be on high alert. The NWS issues these advisories for a reason – public safety is paramount.

So, what does this mean for you? Essentially, it's time to channel your inner defensive driver. Slow way, way down. That's probably the most crucial piece of advice. What feels like a normal speed can quickly become too fast when you can barely see the car in front of you. And please, for the love of all that is safe, use your low-beam headlights. High beams will only reflect off the fog and make visibility even worse – trust me on that one.

Beyond slowing down and using the right lights, you'll want to allow yourself plenty of extra travel time. What might usually be a 20-minute drive could easily turn into 40 or more, and that's perfectly okay. Better to arrive late and safe than not at all. Maintain a significantly increased following distance between your vehicle and others, giving yourself more room to react if something unexpected happens. Remember, fog distorts perception, making things seem further away than they actually are.
