Delhi's Green Initiative: 80 Artificial Ponds Set for Eco-Friendly Idol Immersion

In a significant stride towards environmental conservation and sustainable festive celebrations, the Delhi government is actively preparing 80 dedicated artificial ponds across the national capital for the eco-friendly immersion of idols. This proactive initiative, confirmed by BJP MP Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma, aims to drastically reduce the pollution load on natural water bodies, particularly the revered Yamuna River, during major festivals like Durga Puja and Ganesh Chaturthi.

The annual festive season often witnesses a surge in river pollution due to the immersion of idols made from non-biodegradable materials and toxic paints.

Recognizing this critical environmental challenge, the Delhi government, through various agencies including the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and municipal corporations, has mobilized resources to provide a sustainable alternative for devotees.

Last year, strict measures were already in place following directives from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the DPCC, which outright banned idol immersion in the Yamuna.

These regulations were accompanied by provisions for imposing heavy fines on individuals and groups found violating the environmental norms. The establishment of these 80 artificial ponds is a direct response to these concerns, offering easily accessible and designated spots for immersion that prevent harmful substances from entering the river ecosystem.
