Delhi Zoo on Edge: Awaiting Crucial Bird Flu Test Results for Reopening

The majestic gates of the Delhi Zoo remain firmly shut, casting a quiet pall over what is usually a bustling hub of wildlife and visitors. The National Zoological Park has been closed to the public since October 18, following a concerning outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza.

This virulent strain was first detected after the tragic deaths of two migratory pelicans, swiftly followed by a rising toll that has claimed the lives of 24 birds, including ducks, painted storks, and spoonbills. Seven of these cases have definitively tested positive for the H5N8 strain, prompting immediate and stringent containment measures.

A new batch of crucial samples was dispatched to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal on October 27.
