Delhi University's Student Elections Conclude Smoothly: A Glimpse into Campus Democracy

Delhi University witnessed a vibrant display of campus democracy as its highly anticipated Students' Union (DUSU) elections concluded smoothly on Friday. Thousands of students from across various colleges participated in the electoral process, casting their votes for their chosen representatives, with barely any major hiccups reported throughout the day.

The polling, which commenced at 8:30 AM and continued until 6:00 PM, saw a commendable turnout.

While the final official figures are awaited, preliminary reports indicated a voter turnout of approximately 42% by 5:30 PM, signaling active student engagement in shaping their union's leadership. This figure is closely comparable to the 44% recorded in the last DUSU elections held in 2019, reflecting consistent student participation.

Security arrangements were meticulous, with a significant presence of Delhi Police personnel and college administration deployed across all 52 polling centres.

This robust security framework ensured a largely peaceful environment for students to exercise their franchise. Despite the generally smooth proceedings, a minor scuffle was reported at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, which was swiftly managed by authorities. Additionally, a few instances of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) glitches were noted, but these were promptly addressed, minimizing any disruption to the voting process.

For the first time since 2019, the DUSU polls utilized EVMs provided by the Election Commission of India, underscoring the commitment to a transparent and fair election.

Students eagerly cast their votes for 22 candidates vying for the four crucial posts of President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Joint Secretary. The contest for the President's post was particularly keen, featuring eight candidates, while four aspirants battled for Vice-President, and five each for Secretary and Joint Secretary.

The political landscape saw intense campaigning from the two dominant student organizations: the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the National Students' Union of India (NSUI).

Both parties rallied support with promises addressing student welfare, academic reforms, and campus life improvements, making for a compelling electoral battle.

As the ballot boxes are now sealed, the focus shifts to the counting of votes, scheduled for Saturday, September 23rd. The university community, along with the candidates and their supporters, eagerly awaits the declaration of results, which will usher in a new leadership for the Delhi University Students' Union, tasked with representing the diverse voices and aspirations of its vast student body.
