Delhi Spruces Up for BRICS Summit 2026 at Bharat Mandapam

By the time the first delegates roll into New Delhi, the capital will already be looking a bit like a festival ground. Posters, illuminated arches and colorful banners line the streets around Bharat Mandapam, giving the city a celebratory vibe that’s hard to miss.

The summit, set for September 12‑13, carries the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” It’s more than just a catchy tagline – officials say it reflects the agenda that will dominate the talks among the 11 full‑member nations and a growing list of partners.

For many, the BRICS story reads like a quick history lesson. What began as a BRIC club of Brazil, Russia, India and China in 2006 eventually welcomed South Africa in 2011, turning the quartet into BRICS. Since then, the group has swelled – Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE joined in early 2024, Indonesia followed in 2025 – making the alliance a formidable bloc on the world stage.

Behind the festive façade, Delhi’s traffic police are pulling out all the stops to keep the city moving. Additional Commissioner of Traffic Dinesh Kumar Gupta told ANI that a “detailed traffic arrangement” has been chalked out for the three‑day event. Car‑cade rehearsals are already underway, with routes mapped from the nine hotels where heads of state will stay to the Mandapam venue.

In practice, that means 22 diversion points have been earmarked, and more than 35 roads will see temporary controls or detours, especially in central and south Delhi. Commuters are being urged to plan ahead, use the Delhi Metro where possible and expect occasional stoppages when VIP convoys pass by.

Security, too, is tight but discreet. Officers are briefed on every detail, ensuring that the movement of foreign dignitaries is smooth while public inconvenience is kept to a minimum. It’s a balancing act – showcasing hospitality without turning the city into a gridlock nightmare.
