Delhi Government Under Fire from Supreme Court for Tanker Mafia, Water Wastage

The Supreme Court, in a stern rebuke to the Delhi Government, expressed grave concern over the persistence of the tanker mafia and water wastage plaguing the city. Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Prasanna B. Varale questioned the government's efforts in combating these issues, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

The vacation bench voiced its frustration, questioning the veracity of statements made before the court regarding water distribution and management in Delhi. Noting the visible consequences of water scarcity and wastage, the bench demanded clarity on the measures taken by the government to address the situation.

Advocate Shadan Farasat, representing the Delhi Government, cited actions such as widespread disconnection of water supplies to curb excessive wastage. However, the bench sought a comprehensive report detailing the government's actions to mitigate water loss and combat the activities of the tanker mafia.

The Supreme Court instructed the Delhi Government to submit a detailed report outlining the steps taken to prevent water loss and address the challenges posed by the tanker mafia. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on Thursday, with the court closely monitoring developments.

At the heart of the issue lies a plea filed by the Delhi Government, seeking the release of surplus water from Haryana, supplied by Himachal Pradesh, to alleviate the water crisis in the national capital.
