Deadly Clashes Sweep Southern Sudan, Leaving At Least 21 Dead

On Tuesday evening, gunfire and shouting rang out across several villages in Southern Sudan’s Western Equatoria state, turning what began as a local dispute into a deadly flashpoint. By the early hours of Wednesday, officials confirmed that at least 21 people had been killed, with many more injured.

The violence appears to have pitted two neighbouring ethnic groups against each other, sparking a wave of retaliation that quickly spiralled out of control. Residents described scenes of houses set alight, makeshift roadblocks, and desperate civilians fleeing on foot or in battered trucks, seeking safety in nearby towns.

“We heard shots before sunset and then the smoke… it was chaos,” said one survivor, who asked that her name not be published. “My family ran for hours until we reached the market in Yambio, where the army had set up a temporary camp.”

Local authorities, including the state governor, condemned the attacks and dispatched security forces to the hotspot. However, officials admitted that limited resources and the remote nature of the villages hampered an immediate response. Humanitarian groups have begun assessing the needs of those displaced, noting that many have lost not only loved ones but also their food stores and livestock.

International observers are watching the situation closely, warning that unchecked inter‑communal violence could destabilise a region already struggling with poverty, displacement from past conflicts, and fragile peace agreements. The United Nations office in Juba called for an urgent cease‑fire and urged all parties to engage in dialogue.
