Davis Forges Ahead: A New Horizon for Homeless Daytime Support Services

The City of Davis is taking decisive action to address a critical need within its community, actively seeking a dedicated provider for essential daytime services benefiting its unhoused population. This proactive move comes as the city grapples with the recent closure of a previous program, leaving a significant gap in support for its most vulnerable residents.

In a unanimous decision, the Davis City Council has approved the issuance of a Request for Proposals (RFP), signaling an urgent call for organizations to step forward and offer a safe, accessible, and inclusive daytime space.

The vision for this new program is comprehensive: to create a low-barrier environment where unhoused individuals can find not just shelter from the elements, but also access to crucial amenities and life-changing resources.

Key services envisioned for this new hub include readily available restrooms and clean water, vital charging stations for devices, and perhaps most importantly, direct referrals to a network of support.

These referrals will encompass critical areas such as housing assistance, comprehensive medical and mental health services, and essential employment opportunities, aiming to provide a pathway out of homelessness.

This initiative follows the discontinuation of services by Davis Community Meals and Housing in January 2024, a regrettable event prompted by funding challenges.

Their program, a lifeline for many, routinely served 20 to 30 individuals daily, offering not just physical respite but also a sense of community and connection to vital resources. The absence of such a space has been keenly felt by both the unhoused and the broader Davis community.

Recognizing the immediate need, the city has proactively allocated a substantial $200,000 to fund the new contract.
