David Jonsson Takes Up the Mantle: New Black Panther Revealed at Comic‑Con

San Diego Comic‑Con was buzzing on Saturday, and the hype reached a fever pitch when Ryan Coogler stepped up to the stage and dropped the biggest news of the weekend: David Jonsson is the new Black Panther.

Jonsson, who’s been turning heads in 2024’s Alien: Romulus and the gritty thriller The Long Walk, will step into the shoes – or rather, the vibranium‑clad suit – of T’Challa II, the son of the late Chadwick Boseman’s iconic hero.

“Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join,” Jonsson said, visibly humbled, as he stood beside Coogler, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige. He added, with a nervous grin, “I actually don’t want to say too much because I want to let the screen do the talking. But believe me, the honor is entirely mine.”

The film, officially titled Black Panther 3, is slated for a December 15, 2028 theatrical debut. It will follow the events of 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where the post‑credits scene introduced T’Challa’s son, Toussaint, as the heir apparent, under the watchful eye of his mother Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o).

Letitia Wright, who now leads Wakanda as Shuri, called Jonsson “a special person with a good heart” in a candid chat with Entertainment Weekly. “I’m going to have a really good time, a lot of fun and I’m going to pick on him so much,” she teased, hinting at the on‑set chemistry the duo will bring to the sequel.

Winston Duke, ever the supportive brother‑in‑arms as M’Baku, told Variety he trusts Jonsson’s artistic instincts and sees him as a “great addition to the franchise.” He added, “The grace I was given when I entered this world is what I want to extend to him.”

Both Wright and Duke will also appear in the upcoming ensemble blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday, set for a December release, meaning fans can expect a double dose of Wakandan brilliance before Black Panther 3 even hits the big screen.

Coogler, while lauding Jonsson’s talent, reminded everyone that the story will still be about “letting the screen do the talking.” It’s a promise that the next chapter will honor Boseman’s legacy while forging a fresh path for the next generation of heroes.
