David Jonsson Takes Up the Mantle as the New Black Panther

Saturday’s San Diego Comic‑Con buzzed with excitement when Marvel dropped a bombshell: David Jonsson is the actor stepping into the shoes of the new Black Panther. The announcement came straight from director Ryan Coogler, who took a moment on the panel to single out Jonsson’s recent work in Alien: Romulus (2024) and The Long Walk (2025), calling the young talent “incredible.”

Jonsson isn’t just another face in the crowd. He’ll be playing the grown‑up version of T’Challa II – also known as Toussaint – the son introduced in the post‑credits scene of 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where his mother Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) hinted at his future role.

“Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join,” Jonsson said, standing shoulder‑to‑shoulder with Coogler, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. He added, “I actually don’t want to say too much because I want to let the screen do the talking. But believe me, the honor is entirely mine.”

The film, titled Black Panther 3, is slated to hit theaters on December 15, 2028. It will continue the saga that began with Chadwick Boseman’s groundbreaking performance before his untimely passing in 2020, a loss that forced the franchise to rewrite its narrative and elevate Shuri (Letitia Wright) to the throne.

Wright, glowing in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, described Jonsson as “a special person with a good heart” and teased that she’ll enjoy “picking on him” as they share screen time. Meanwhile, Winston Duke, who plays M’Baku, told Variety he trusts Jonsson’s artistic instincts and promised to extend the same “grace” he received when joining the world of Wakanda.

Both Wright and Duke are also slated for the ensemble‑driven Avengers: Doomsday, set for release this December, ensuring they’ll be back on the big screen sooner than fans might think.

As the excitement settled, the consensus was clear: Marvel has handed the Black Panther legacy to a fresh generation, and with Jonsson at the helm, the future of Wakanda looks both promising and wildly entertaining.
