Cyclone Alert: Southern India Shuts Down Schools and Colleges Amidst Heavy Rain Warnings

As a powerful deep depression intensifies in the Bay of Bengal, leading to cyclone alerts, educational institutions across several southern Indian states have announced closures, prioritizing the safety of students and staff. Authorities in Tamil Nadu, Chennai, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry have issued directives for schools and colleges to remain shut on October 22 and 23, with specific dates varying by district, as heavy rainfall is anticipated to lash these regions.

In the bustling metropolis of Chennai, the District Collector has mandated the closure of all schools on both Monday, October 22, and Tuesday, October 23.

This precautionary measure extends to the neighboring districts of Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu, where schools will also remain closed on October 23, bracing for the inclement weather. Further inland, districts like Theni, Madurai, and Dindigul have also declared a holiday for schools and colleges on October 23, responding to forecasts of severe rainfall.

The coastal state of Andhra Pradesh is also on high alert.

In Kakinada, both schools and colleges were ordered to close on October 22. This decision came in response to the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to bring significant precipitation and strong winds to the region. Residents are advised to stay informed through local news and official advisories.

The Union Territory of Puducherry has similarly taken proactive steps.

Both schools and colleges in Puducherry will remain closed for two days, on October 22 and October 23, in light of the ongoing and projected heavy rainfall. This comprehensive closure aims to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure that students are not exposed to hazardous travel conditions.

These widespread closures are a direct response to warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which has been closely tracking the weather system.

With the potential for cyclonic conditions and very heavy rainfall, state governments and district administrations are taking all necessary precautions to safeguard public well-being and minimize disruption, urging citizens to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines during this period of adverse weather.
