Critical Repairs Spark Two Weeks of Nightly Alexandra Bridge Closures

Prepare for significant nightly disruptions on the iconic Alexandra Bridge as essential structural steel repair work is set to close the span completely for two weeks. These vital upgrades are crucial for ensuring the long-term safety and integrity of the bridge, a key connector between our two cities.

Starting Sunday, June 16, and running through Thursday, June 27, the Alexandra Bridge will be fully shut down each night from 7 p.m.

to 6 a.m. Please note, these closures will not occur on Friday or Saturday nights, offering a slight reprieve for weekend plans. This means that for nearly two full weeks, access will be restricted for all modes of transport: cars, bikes, and pedestrians alike will need to seek alternative routes during these overnight hours.

The National Capital Commission (NCC) has confirmed that this comprehensive closure is necessary to facilitate critical repairs.

While inconvenient in the short term, these efforts are an investment in our shared infrastructure, ensuring the bridge remains a safe and reliable passage for years to come. Your patience and understanding during this period are greatly appreciated as crews work diligently to complete the essential maintenance.

For motorists, the primary alternative will be the nearby Portage Bridge.

Cyclists and pedestrians will also need to reroute; the Chaudière Bridge is a viable option, or consider utilizing OC Transpo or STO services which offer routes across the river. It's highly recommended to plan your evening and early morning commutes well in advance, allowing extra time for travel and potential detours.

Adding to the complexity, commuters should be aware of additional closures impacting the Gatineau-bound lanes of the Portage Bridge.

These lanes will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on various dates: Monday, June 17, to Thursday, June 20, and again from Monday, June 24, to Thursday, June 27. These separate closures are for inspection work and will coincide with many of the Alexandra Bridge nightly closures, potentially increasing congestion on remaining routes.
