Crisis in Kathmandu: Karnataka Rushes to Aid 30 Kannadigas Stranded Amidst Nepal Protests

Kathmandu, Nepal: A wave of fervent 'Gen Z' protests demanding the restoration of a Hindu Rashtra and monarchy has thrown Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, into chaos, leaving an alarming number of visitors and residents in precarious situations. Among those caught in the escalating turmoil are 30 individuals from Karnataka, including students and workers, who found themselves stranded amidst curfews, internet shutdowns, and dwindling essential supplies.

The protests, driven by a youthful demographic advocating for significant political and religious shifts, have led to widespread disruptions.

Reports from the ground paint a grim picture: roads blocked, public transport halted, and a general atmosphere of uncertainty gripping the city. For the stranded Kannadigas, this meant not just an unexpected delay but a genuine concern for their safety and access to basic necessities.

One such individual, Abhin, a student from Karnataka, managed to convey the gravity of the situation to his family back home.

His message, echoing the sentiments of many others, highlighted the sudden imposition of curfews and the subsequent challenges in procuring food and water. These personal accounts quickly reached the ears of the Karnataka state government, triggering an immediate and robust response.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, upon learning of the plight of his state's citizens, wasted no time.

He promptly contacted the Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister, Rajaneesh Goel, directing him to coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Indian Embassy in Nepal. The objective was clear: ensure the safe return of all stranded Kannadigas.

The state machinery swung into action, with the Chief Secretary of Karnataka, Vandita Sharma, taking charge of the coordination efforts.

Regular communication channels were established with the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu to ascertain the exact number and whereabouts of the Kannadigas and to facilitate their evacuation. The primary focus was on ensuring their immediate safety and providing necessary assistance.

While the protests continue to simmer, the swift action by the Karnataka government has offered a beacon of hope for the stranded individuals and their anxious families.

Efforts are ongoing to navigate the logistical challenges posed by the unrest and to bring all 30 Kannadigas back to their homes safely, demonstrating the state's unwavering commitment to its citizens, even when they are far from home.
