Congress Overhauls State Leadership: Pilot Assigned to Punjab, Surjewala Takes Gujarat & Karnataka

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) rolled out a fresh batch of appointments on Saturday, signalling a brisk push to restructure its state‑level machinery before the looming assembly elections. The changes, which took effect immediately, were announced via a press release from AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal.

Leading the charge is former Rajasthan Deputy CM Sachin Pilot, who has now been named General Secretary in‑charge of Punjab. Pilot, known for his youthful energy and organisational acumen, is expected to revitalize the party’s ground‑level outreach in the north‑western state, especially as the polls draw nearer.

Not far behind, veteran leader Randeep Singh Surjewala received a double‑duty appointment. He will oversee Gujarat as General Secretary in‑charge and will also carry the reins for Karnataka. Surjewala’s experience in both the Hindi‑belt and the south‑west is being touted as a strategic bridge for the party’s pan‑Indian aspirations.

In a parallel move, Chhattisgarh’s Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel was shifted from his previous role to become the General Secretary in‑charge of Assam. Baghel’s shift underscores the Congress’ intent to inject fresh perspectives into the northeastern frontier, where the party hopes to make a comeback.

Other notable postings include Sukhdeo Bhagat for Chhattisgarh, Sirivella Prasad for Maharashtra, and P.V. Mohan for Andhra Pradesh. The release also thanked outgoing in‑charges Jitendra Singh, Ramesh Chennithala and Manickam Tagore for their services, while confirming that Mukul Wasnik will continue as AICC General Secretary.

Beyond the senior leadership shuffle, the Congress also bolstered its digital front. On August 29, the party appointed Sandeep Gupta and Akshit Singh as national coordinators to steer social‑media strategies for the upcoming Uttarakhand polls. Similar appointments were made for Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, and Manipur, reflecting a broader trend of sharpening online outreach ahead of the 2026 state elections.

Analysts say the timing is deliberate: the party is racing against the clock to rebuild its cadre base, tighten its messaging, and counter opposition narratives across key battlegrounds. Whether these moves translate into electoral gains remains to be seen, but the reshuffle undeniably marks a decisive step in Congress’ pre‑poll playbook.
