Community Highlights: Scholarships, Bulb Sales, Arts Fest, and More in the Chicago Suburbs

Earlier this summer, UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale and La Grange Hospitals slipped a handful of bright‑eyed high‑schoolers a $4,000 scholarship each. Twelve students from Lyons, Hinsdale South, Hinsdale Central and Westmont high schools were honored for their leadership, grades and genuine interest in health‑care careers. Across town, an anonymous board member at Elmhurst University quietly pledged more than $1.5 million. The gift will seed an endowed professorship and a scholarship for the School of Business, giving the school the flexibility to expand programs the donor feels are most needed. The donor, who asked to remain unnamed, said it’s a “student‑centered” gesture that will let the university shape its own future.

Nature lovers have a date on September 17. The Friends of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County are selling tickets to “A Night for Nature” at St. James Farm Forest Preserve in Warrenville. Keeping health on the agenda, OptWell’s “Walk With a Doc” series continues its monthly strolls. Every third Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon, a doctor leads a casual walk—May through September at Countryside Park’s gazebo and playground, and October through April at the La Grange Recreation Center. Participants pick up evidence‑based tips, ask questions, and get a gentle nudge to stay active.
