Chisholm’s clutch homer lifts Yankees over Dodgers in doubleheader split

After a rainout forced the first game of the day‑night doubleheader to be pushed back, the Yankees and Dodgers met again Sunday night with the Bronx crowd buzzing. Jazz Chisholm Jr. stepped up in the eighth and sent a fastball soaring to left‑center for a 2‑1 win, giving New York its second victory in the last 11 home games.

The opener had been a lopsided affair. Los Angeles pounced early, taking an 8‑2 lead behind Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s first regular‑season complete game in 66 starts. That win reminded everyone just how tough the Dodgers can be when their bullpen clicks.

Sunday’s second tilt, however, turned into a classic bullpen showdown. New York’s trio of Ryan Yarbrough, Paul Blackburn and Brent Headrick combined to blank the Dodgers through seven innings, allowing just three hits. The only spark for LA came when pinch‑hitter Tommy Edman belted a solo homer to knot the game at 1‑1 in the top of the eighth – his second homer of the season and only the third pinch‑hit long ball of his career.

When the ninth inning rolled around, closer David Bednar entered with the bases empty. He first struck out Shohei Ohtani, then watched Chisholm make a wobbly catch on Andy Pages’ popup before the rookie turned his attention to the plate. On the very next pitch, Chisholm took a 1‑0 fastball from Evan Phillips and launched it into left‑center, his 14th career homer and the decisive run of the night.

Cody Bellinger had given the Yankees an early boost with an RBI single, and Paul Goldschmidt’s double off Dodgers starter Will Klein helped set up that run. In total, New York stranded 11 runners and loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth, but the bullpen held firm.

Both clubs will turn to new arms tomorrow. The Dodgers will hand the ball to right‑hander Emmet Sheehan, while the Yankees will start left‑hander Ryan Weathers against Pittsburgh’s Braxton Ashcraft.
