China’s 5G‑Powered Driverless Trucks Transform Coal Mining

The Yimin open‑pit mine has rolled out a hundred Huaneng Ruichi trucks, all electric, all autonomous, all thriving in winter temperatures that can plunge to –40 °C.

These trucks are built from the ground up for driverless work. There’s no windscreen to shatter, no heater to maintain, no mirrors to adjust. The site is the first open‑pit mine hooked to a 5G‑Advanced network delivering roughly 500 Mbps uplink and a jaw‑dropping 20 ms latency. Every truck streams HD video back to a Huawei‑run cloud, which builds a live, crowdsourced map of the pit. The cloud then pushes route updates and dispatch instructions down to each vehicle. The speed of China’s rollout is a product of policy as much as technology. All told, each driverless Haul truck at Yimin is cranking out roughly 120 % of what a comparable diesel‑powered, human‑driven unit would manage. The trucks keep the mine humming through bitter winters, they shave years off the fleet’s wear‑and‑tear, and they remove a human from the most dangerous job on site. Whether the model can be exported elsewhere remains to be seen, but for now China’s coal pits are a living laboratory of electric, cab‑less, 5G‑linked mining.
