In the past two years China has quietly harvested a sizeable slice of America’s scientific elite. A recent tally by the New York Post shows that 105 researchers, engineers and physicians have swapped U.S. universities or corporate labs for positions in Beijing, Shenzhen or other Chinese hubs.

Take former Harvard chemistry chair Charles Lieber, who was offered roughly $900,000 in salary plus $150,000 for living expenses and a brand‑new lab in Shenzhen. He now heads a state‑run institute aimed at creating an “AI super‑soldier” – a project that would have sounded like sci‑fi a decade ago.
Another high‑profile case is Nobel laureate Omar Yaghi, celebrated for his work on porous materials that could pull water from desert air. After winning the 2025 chemistry prize, he walked away from UC Berkeley to lead an AI‑driven materials institute at Tsinghua University.
Biologists and virologists have also been on the move. Harvard’s virologist Haitao Hu left the University of Texas to join the Chinese Academy of Sciences, where he now runs a vaccine‑development team targeting HIV and other major viruses. Earlier this year, biologist Xianzhong Xu returned to China after a controversial episode at the University of Michigan involving alleged smuggling of biological material—though Xu himself was never charged.
Even brain‑researchers are being courted. Zhonghua Gao, who spent two decades in the U.S. studying autism and cancer with NIH grants, took a senior role at Shenzhen’s newly formed University of Advanced Technology, tasked with recruiting more talent.
Experts say the pattern is no accident. Jack Burnham, senior analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, notes that “the battle for scientific talent is now a national‑security issue for both Washington and Beijing.” He points to a perfect storm of U.S. funding stalls, immigration hurdles for foreign scholars, and China’s willingness to offer unrestricted research environments.
China’s pharmaceutical market is now the world’s second‑largest, and it already outpaces the United States in the number of clinical trials it runs. For many scientists, the promise of faster, less‑regulated progress is tempting.
U.S. officials, including the FBI, have warned that these talent‑recruiting programs are part of a broader strategy to acquire critical technologies for military and strategic uses. The question now is whether Washington can reverse the trend before the talent gap widens further.
