Castaic residents, already facing scorching conditions, found themselves on edge Friday afternoon as a fast-moving brush fire, quickly named the Martin Fire, erupted right on their doorstep. It was a frightening scene, as plumes of thick smoke began to billow into the sky from the hills nestled between Hasley Canyon Road and Lake Hughes Road, all perilously close to the bustling 5 Freeway.

The alarm was raised around 3:30 p.m., and from the get-go, firefighters knew they had a serious challenge on their hands. Initially reported at about 30 acres, the blaze, fueled by dry brush and the day's heat, didn't waste any time. Before we knew it, it had more than doubled in size, charring a significant 60 acres. By evening, a small glimmer of hope emerged as crews managed to achieve 20% containment – a testament to their relentless efforts, but still a long way to go.

Naturally, the immediate concern turned to public safety. The Los Angeles County Fire Department didn't hesitate to issue an evacuation warning for those living along Hasley Canyon Road and North Lake Hughes Road.
