Carlos Dominguez Sent to Napa State Hospital After Davis Stabbing Trial

WOODLAND, Calif. — The man at the center of the 2023 Davis stabbing spree, Carlos Reales Dominguez, was moved to Napa State Hospital on Saturday to begin a court‑ordered stay of care. The transfer follows a ruling that he be committed for at least six months while his mental‑health status is evaluated.

During a somber hearing, the judge cited the heartbreaking impact statements delivered by the families of the two men who lost their lives—David “Compassion Guy” Breaux and UC Davis student Karim Abou Najm. Their words, raw and vivid, underscored the community’s lingering grief.

Dominguez’s case has already been the subject of intense scrutiny. A Yolo County jury previously found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter for the deaths of Breaux and Abou Najm, but acquitted him of attempted murder in the stabbing of Kimberlee Guillory, who survived.

The legal focus shifted from the crimes themselves to Dominguez’s mental condition. In his first trial he admitted to the attacks, yet his defense argued that untreated schizophrenia had driven him into a psychotic break. By waiving his right to a jury trial on the insanity issue, Dominguez allowed a judge to determine that he was legally insane at the time of the offenses.

Now, after the six‑month commitment was set, Yolo County District Attorney Melinda Aiello filed a petition asking the court to extend Dominguez’s stay for another two years. The DA’s office says continued treatment is essential for public safety and for Dominguez’s own well‑being.
