Capturing Hearts: A Glimpse into the 2026 International Pet Photography Awards Finalists

There's something truly special about the bond we share with our animal companions, isn't there? And when that connection is beautifully captured through the lens of a talented photographer, it becomes a piece of art that speaks volumes. That's exactly what the International Pet Photography Awards celebrate, and as it marks its eighth incredible year, the 2026 competition has once again delivered an astounding collection of images.

This year saw an astonishing 4,220 entries pour in from 48 countries – a testament to the global passion for pet photography! It's clear that artists worldwide are dedicating themselves to freezing those fleeting, precious moments with our furry, feathered, and scaled friends. The competition keeps evolving too, introducing four exciting new categories this year: Commissioned Portfolio, In-Camera Artistry, Phone, and Studio. These join beloved mainstays like Action, Canine Portrait, Creative, Documentary, Equine Portrait, Feline Portrait, Open Portrait, and Pets and People, ensuring every facet of animal photography is recognized.

With so many incredible submissions, the task of judging fell to an international panel of 27 specialist animal photographers – experts who truly understand the nuance and skill involved in capturing a pet's unique spirit. After much deliberation, the finalists for the prestigious 'International Pet Photographer of the Year' title were finally unveiled on July 20, 2026 (AEST). The suspense is certainly building as we eagerly await the overall and category winners, who will be announced on August 1st, with individual scores and feedback following by August 5th.

So, who are the five exceptional photographers vying for the top honor? A huge congratulations goes to Belinda Richards, Callie Soden, Inge Heimensen, Katie Brockman, and Mirka Koot! Each of them has demonstrated an extraordinary eye and technical prowess that sets their work apart.

Beyond the overall title, some truly captivating images stood out among the category finalists. Callie Soden, for instance, earned a commendation in the Creative category for a truly thought-provoking scene: a dog appearing to pray at a church altar. It’s a vision that sparks conversation, though we hear there's a little buzz about whether it's a composite – still, the artistry is undeniably compelling! Then there’s Inge Heimensen’s adorable finalist entry, a charming close-up of a tiny chick nestled among eggs. Mirka Koot offers another captivating image, featuring a feline seemingly engaged in a deep conversation with a crow; again, whispers suggest it might be a composite, but the storytelling is pure magic.

Katie Brockman's powerful black-and-white profile of a canine is a stunning study in elegance and strength. Kelly Borger’s entry in the Documentary category is wonderfully evocative, capturing a dog paused, almost philosophizing, as it gazes at a rope bridge – what a moment! Betty Brodie gave us a breathtaking Feline Portrait of a cat looking absolutely regal against a snow-covered landscape. Carolin Melin's 'Professor Pytti' in the Creative category definitely sparks curiosity, and Jennifer Chassagnol's 'The Lucky Ones' made waves in the Open Portrait category.

And who could forget Louise Wolbers' unexpected delight, 'Emerald Eyed Tree Frog,' proving that pet photography truly embraces all creatures, great and small! Shandess Griffin’s commissioned portfolio also earned a well-deserved finalist spot, highlighting the professional artistry within the field. Finally, Chantal Levesque’s 'Levitating' in the Action category truly lives up to its name – you just have to see it to believe the dynamic energy captured!

Of course, beyond the accolades, there are fantastic prizes too. The 'International Pet Photographer of the Year' receives a $500 USD cash prize, personalized mentoring sessions with industry giants Charlotte Reeves, Craig Turner-Bullock, and Mark Rossetto, annual memberships to Unleashed Education and the Professional Photography Business Network, plus 250 Accreditation points and a shiny trophy. Category winners aren't left out either, walking away with $250 USD and year-long memberships to both Unleashed Education and the Professional Photography Business Network.
