When Ishan Kishan took over the Jharkhand captaincy in early 2024, he admits it was more than just a badge on his jersey – it was a catalyst for change. After the sting of losing his BCCI central contract in late 2023, the 28‑year‑old returned to his state side, grabbed the reins, and never looked back.

“You have to take responsibility,” Kishan told reporters after a post‑match press conference. “If you don’t do it now, when will you?” He added that he’s no longer that 22‑year‑old kid who relied on senior players to do the heavy lifting. “Now I’m part of the core group, so it’s on me to make the total climb.”

That shift in attitude, he says, wasn’t just about runs. It seeped into his everyday life, making him calmer, more aware and oddly more patient with his own quirks. “Going through the whole captaincy process leads to immense personal growth,” he reflected, chuckling that he’s finally out of his “wild‑child” days.

In the Duleep Trophy final, captaining the East Zone, Kishan smashed a mammoth 270, steering his side to a staggering 708‑all‑out in the first innings. “I could have gone for attacking shots all the way, but the team’s goal was a big total,” he said, emphasizing temperament over flash.

Leadership, according to Kishan, is a constant state of vigilance. “You have to stay alert the whole day, understand what’s happening and what isn’t,” he explained. The small, often‑overlooked routines – arriving on time, batting in the nets, cheering a teammate’s good shot – suddenly become duties of a captain. “If your teammates improve, the team wins,” he added, underscoring the ripple effect of personal accountability.

That mindset paid off. After his stellar domestic season, the selector’s door swung open again, and Kishan found himself back in the Indian fold for white‑ball formats.
