BRICS Courts Unite: Russian Chief Justice Stresses Role of Justice in a Multipolar Era

New Delhi – The opening session of the Forum of Presidents of the Supreme Courts of the BRICS Member States turned into a lively exchange of ideas when Russian Supreme Court Chairman Igor Krasnov took the podium. He didn’t just recite a script; he spoke with a palpable sense of urgency about the challenges that a truly multipolar world brings.

“In today’s era of global transformation, the BRICS countries have to respond together to the most complex threats while safeguarding the rule of law,” Krasnov told the assembled judges, ministers and legal scholars. He paused, glanced at the audience, and added, “Our courts, frankly, are the most important guarantors of stability and justice as the world rearranges itself.”

The Russian chief justice went on to say that the forum itself should become a laboratory for fresh concepts – new procedural tools, joint training programmes, and perhaps even cross‑border mechanisms for dealing with trans‑national crimes. “If we manage to turn these ideas into practice, the quality of justice in all our nations will rise, and citizens will trust their courts more,” he said, a hint of optimism in his voice.

Hosting the meeting, India provided not only the logistical backdrop but also a spirit of openness. Krasnov noted the “constructive atmosphere” created by the Indian hosts, which, in his view, encouraged frank discussion about the day‑to‑day workings of supreme courts across five very different societies.

While the dialogue covered technical legal matters, the underlying theme was unmistakable: a coordinated judicial front can help temper the uncertainties of a shifting global order. Krasnov’s remarks dovetailed with broader diplomatic signals – President Putin’s upcoming BRICS visit, for instance, is expected to deepen Indo‑Russian ties, a point recently highlighted by Indian Prime Minister Modi.

In short, the summit underscored a simple yet powerful idea. When courts from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa speak the same language of justice, they reinforce each other’s legitimacy, and that, in turn, bolsters the very fabric of a multipolar world.
