Bountiful Handcart Days Keeps Pioneer Spirit Alive

When the summer heat rolls in over the Salt Lake Valley, Bountiful’s streets start humming with a familiar, nostalgic rhythm. It’s Handcart Days – the town’s own twist on Pioneer Day that’s now in its 76th year. Mayor Kate Bradshaw and Council Member Beth Child, who chairs the parade committee, are already on the ground making sure everything runs smoothly.

Mark your calendars for July 24‑25, 2026. On Friday evening, the park will open its gates from 5 PM to 9:30 PM, offering food stalls, games, and the kind of casual camaraderie that only a small‑town celebration can provide. Think of it as a warm‑up before the real action kicks off the next day.

Saturday starts before sunrise. At 5:30 AM, runners – locals and visitors alike – line up for the Handcart Days Half Marathon, a 5K, and a 1K. It’s a brisk, salty‑air run that sets the tone for the day. By 9:00 AM, the Main Street parade rolls through, echoing the historic handcarts that once trekked across the plains. The sight of hand‑crafted wagons, marching bands, and folk dancers is a visual reminder of the pioneer legacy.

Later, from 10 AM to 3 PM, the park buzzes with activities: kids’ craft stations, local vendors, and plenty of photo‑ops. And just when you think you’ve seen it all, the night brings a free concert at 8 PM featuring virtuoso violinist Jenny Oaks Baker and the Family Four. Their melodies drift over the crowd, creating a relaxed, family‑friendly vibe.

To cap off the weekend, fireworks burst in the sky at 10 PM, painting the night with color and ending the celebration on a high note. All of this is possible thanks to roughly 700 volunteers hailing from Bountiful, North Salt Lake, Woods Cross and West Bountiful – a testament to the community’s dedication.
