At the same time, a tiny muscle biopsy was taken for stable‑isotope analysis – carbon and nitrogen ratios that act like dietary fingerprints, revealing what the sharks have been eating over months, not just their last meal.
The isotope data painted an interesting picture. Sharks from Biscayne Bay and Tampa Bay occupied distinct food webs, meaning the two populations were feeding in chemically different ecosystems. Yet, within each bay, males and females shared most of the same prey sources. In other words, diet doesn’t explain why the sexes look different.
"We found no link between what the sharks ate and how their heads changed," Liu explains. "That rules out the old hypothesis that male and female head shapes evolved because they hunt different foods."
So why the pointed head at all? The authors speculate that a more tapered shape might help younger, smaller sharks swim more efficiently – a kind of hydrodynamic advantage that fades as females grow larger to accommodate developing embryos. Testing that idea will require swimming‑performance trials and perhaps embryological studies, a research direction the team is eager to pursue.
Beyond the science, the authors see practical upside. The photographic method they refined can be rolled out to other regions, letting researchers compare head‑shape trends across the bonnethead’s range. Such comparisons could uncover regional quirks that matter for conservation, especially as managers design area‑specific protection plans.
