Bommai Fires Back at Rahul Gandhi, Hails India's 7.8% Growth Spurt

Speaking to reporters in Gadag on Thursday, former Karnataka chief minister and BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai didn’t hold back. He took a sharp swipe at Congress stalwart Rahul Gandhi, insisting the opposition leader has "no moral right" to comment on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s record.

Bommai said Rahul Gandhi seemed intent on dragging the United States’ former president, Donald Trump, into India’s domestic narrative. “Trump does whatever he wants, but Rahul is trying to link it to our country’s situation,” he remarked, a hint of irony in his tone.

What, according to Bommai, really matters is the numbers on the blackboard. India, he pointed out, is now registering a 7.8 percent growth rate – a jump he called “incredible progress” that, in his view, outshines even the economies of the United States or Russia.

He didn’t stop at the growth figures. Turning to history, Bommai levied criticism at the Congress party for the 1975 Emergency imposed under then‑prime minister Indira Gandhi. “When Indira Gandhi lost her majority, a minority government leaned on the Communists and imposed an Emergency. That’s a lesson we must never forget,” he said, invoking the darker chapter to contrast with today’s purported achievements.

Bommai also piled praise on Prime Minister Modi, crediting his “vision, programmes and implementation power” for steering India toward becoming the world’s third‑largest economy, even amid global turbulence.

Shifting focus back to his home state, Bommai raised alarms about alleged irregularities in the Karnataka Public Service Commission and questionable police transfers. He claimed the KPSC scandal was gradually surfacing and that ordinary citizens were struggling with basic services like KYC and ration‑card issuance.

With a firm tone, he demanded a full CBI investigation into these Karnataka‑specific issues and warned that if the state government failed to act, protests would only intensify.
