Blue Lock Studio Announces Dark Fantasy ‘Witch and Mercenary’ for Spring 2027

When you think of Studio 8bit, the first titles that pop into your head are probably Blue Lock and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. The studio, founded back in 2008, has churned out dozens of series, but the second season of Blue Lock sparked a fair amount of controversy in 2024 because of its uneven animation. Fans weren’t happy, but the blip was largely chalked up to production hiccups rather than a sign that the studio had lost its touch.

Fast‑forward to today, and 8bit is looking forward, not backward. While they’ve confirmed a new season of Blue Lock that will adapt the Neo Egoist League arc, they’ve also dropped the first look at a brand‑new project: a dark fantasy called Witch and Mercenary. Because of that, the populace lives in constant fear, and witches are hunted like pests.

Enter Saisha, a witch who would rather keep her head down and live peacefully. Unfortunately, her very existence makes her a target, and one by one, enemies close in. After a particularly harrowing battle, Saisha teams up with a lone mercenary named Zig. Together they set out for uncharted lands, hoping to escape the relentless persecution that follows them. As the duo ventures deeper, they discover that the world’s darkness is far more twisted than anyone imagined.

Visually, the trailer hints at a gritty, atmospheric aesthetic – think moody landscapes, stark lighting, and a colour palette that leans toward muted earth tones. The animation quality looks polished, a reassuring sign after the second‑season hiccup of Blue Lock. Musically, Tanimura’s composition promises a blend of haunting orchestral pieces and occasional folk‑flavored motifs, underscoring the series’ blend of melancholy and adventure.
