Beta Film Nets Major Deals for Royal Drama “Queen Silvia” and Barcelona Series “La Vida Barcelona”

Beta Film clinches big sales for two female‑led series

Beta Film has sold its new series “Queen Silvia” to Sweden’s SVT and “La Vida Barcelona” to Germany’s ZDF, marking a strong push for female‑fronted dramas in Europe.

Beta Film is riding a wave of good news after it sealed two high‑profile sales that put its female‑driven catalogue front and centre of the European market. The first is the royal romance “Queen Silvia,” a series that dramatizes the unlikely love story of German‑Brazilian interpreter Silvia Sommerlath and Sweden’s Crown Prince Carl Gustaf. The second is the colourful coming‑of‑age drama “La Vida Barcelona,” which follows a young Dutch designer navigating love, ambition and the bustling creative scene of Barcelona.

Sweden’s public broadcaster SVT stepped in to pick up the second‑window rights for “Queen Silvia” – after Prime Video secured the first run – just ahead of the series’ world premiere at Cannes. “It’s a warm, engaging portrait of a real‑life love that has endured for almost six decades,” said Karolina Stallwood, SVT’s head of acquisitions, adding that the early‑1970s backdrop adds a nostalgic charm.

The series, produced by Germany’s Pyjama Pictures and Unlimited Stories, stars Alicia von Rittberg as Silvia and Edvin Endre as Carl Gustaf. Directed by Miguel Alexandre, who co‑wrote the script with Lisa Hofer, the eight‑part drama jumps between Munich, Stockholm and the French Riviera, exploring the tension between personal desire and royal duty. Funding comes from the German Motion Picture Fund, Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg and FilmFörderung Bayern.

Meanwhile, German public channel ZDF announced a co‑production partnership on “La Vida Barcelona,” joining forces with Beta Film and Millstreet Films. The series is helmed by a trio of directors – Katina Medina Mora, Charlotte Scott‑Wilson and Ayla Spaans – and features a cast that includes Priscilla Delgado, Greta Fernández and Dutch actress Holly Mae Brood in the lead role of Julia.

“We’re excited to bring ‘La Vida Barcelona’ to German audiences,” said Frank Seyberth, head of co‑production for international fiction at ZDF. “Its relatable characters, romantic tone and the vibrant energy of Barcelona make it a perfect fit for young viewers across Europe.” The plot follows Julia, a designer sent to Barcelona by her mother on a secret mission, only to have the city upend her plans and lead her into new work, friendships and two unexpected romances.

Both projects showcase Beta Film’s commitment to stories told through a female lens, echoing the success of earlier hits like “Máxima.” With strong production partners, solid funding and enthusiastic broadcasters, “Queen Silvia” will debut at Cannes’ Grand Auditorium, while “La Vida Barcelona” is slated to begin shooting later this year, aiming for a spring‑time launch on ZDF and partner platforms.
