Bengaluru's Digital Battleground: Social Media Crimes Skyrocket by 21%

Bengaluru, India's tech capital, is grappling with a concerning surge in social media-related crimes, witnessing a staggering 21% increase in cases from 2022 to 2023. This alarming trend highlights the darker side of our increasingly connected world, where digital platforms, while offering convenience and connection, also serve as fertile ground for criminal activities.

According to official reports, the number of social media crime cases escalated from 556 in 2022 to 673 in 2023.

This jump underscores a critical challenge for law enforcement and a significant threat to the online safety of the city's residents. The rise isn't merely in volume; it's also in the complexity and variety of offenses being committed.

The spectrum of crimes reported is broad and deeply troubling.

Online financial frauds, where perpetrators cunningly trick victims into parting with their money, remain a significant concern. Beyond monetary losses, the emotional and psychological toll of cyberstalking, harassment, and blackmail is devastating. The creation of fake profiles to impersonate, defame, or exploit individuals has also seen a sharp rise, eroding trust and causing widespread distress.

A particularly vulnerable demographic appears to be young people, especially women, who are frequently targeted by online predators.
