Bengaluru Woman Kidnapped Over Loan Dispute; Two Women Among Three Arrested

When a 30‑year‑old woman from Bengaluru went missing in late August, her family feared the worst. The truth, when it finally emerged, was far more disturbing – she had been lured, bound, stripped and filmed by people she once trusted over a loan she couldn’t repay.

According to the police FIR, the ordeal began on August 27. The victim had borrowed ₹50,000 from a man called Nazath on a weekly repayment plan and, about two years earlier, a further ₹1 lakh from a woman named Reshma Banu. Financial stress meant she missed a few instalments, which set off a chain of events that ended in her abduction.

Nazath invited her to his home in Metro Layout under the pretense of some work. Once there, Reshma, her husband Suhail and a couple of unknown men entered the house, threatened her with a knife and beat her with a stick. They also smashed her mobile phone. The assailants then forced the woman and her young son into an autorickshaw, taking them to Kumbalgodu.

There, she was locked in a room for two days. The captors demanded payment of an alleged ₹11 lakh, interest included, and threatened to circulate a video of her partially undressed if she refused. The victim was indeed forced to strip partially, and the criminals recorded the humiliating footage on a phone. They even took her to a nearby lawyer, made her sign papers, and then brought her back to the grim hide‑out.

On the third day, the woman pretended she needed to use the toilet. While the captors were distracted, she managed to slip a brief warning to a passing officer. Police, acting on the tip, arrived at the house, rescued her and rushed her to Chandra Layout police station.

Investigators filed a case against five people – Nazath, Reshma, Suhail, a man named Saif and another unidentified accomplice. After weeks of questioning and chasing leads, three suspects were apprehended: Nazath, Reshma Banu and Suhail. Both women are now in custody, while the police continue to hunt the remaining two alleged participants.

The incident has sparked outrage across the city. Advocacy groups argue that the case highlights the vulnerability of borrowers, especially women, who may be coerced into dangerous situations when they default on informal loans. Bengaluru police have pledged a thorough probe and promised stricter action against similar crimes.

For now, the rescued woman is receiving medical and psychological care, and the case serves as a grim reminder that financial distress should never be met with violence or intimidation.
