Bengaluru Submerged: Overnight Deluge Paralyzes City, IMD Forecasts More Heavy Rains

Bengaluru, the bustling Silicon Valley of India, woke up to an unprecedented scene of chaos and disruption on Monday morning, as relentless overnight rains transformed its usually vibrant streets into churning rivers. The torrential downpour, which began late Sunday, continued unabated for hours, leaving vast swathes of the city waterlogged, traffic grinding to a complete standstill, and thousands grappling with power outages.

Residents across key areas bore the brunt of nature's fury.

High-profile localities such as HSR Layout, Koramangala, Indiranagar, Marathahalli, Bellandur, and Sarjapur Road were particularly affected, with cars submerged, underpasses becoming treacherous waterways, and basements flooding. The sheer volume of water made commuting a nightmare, trapping motorists and pedestrians alike in gridlock that stretched for miles.

Social media was flooded with images and videos depicting the city's struggle, showcasing submerged vehicles and citizens wading through knee-deep water.

Adding to the city's woes, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a stern warning: the worst may not be over. Forecasters predict that Bengaluru, along with coastal and south interior Karnataka, should brace for more heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two to three days.

A yellow alert has been sounded for Bengaluru and several other districts, indicating the likelihood of continued adverse weather conditions.

In response to the escalating crisis, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai convened an emergency meeting with officials to assess the situation and strategize relief efforts.

Directives were issued to civic authorities, including the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), to deploy resources immediately for water draining, tree removal, and addressing citizen complaints. The BBMP's control rooms have been inundated with calls from distressed residents reporting flooding, fallen trees, and power supply disruptions.

Data from weather stations painted a clear picture of the intensity.

Bengaluru city recorded a significant 51 mm of rainfall, while the HAL airport received an even higher 57.5 mm. Kempegowda International Airport also saw substantial precipitation with 25.5 mm. The relentless rain has not only impacted daily life but also raised serious concerns about the city's infrastructure and its capacity to handle increasingly frequent extreme weather events.

As Bengaluru braces for more challenging days ahead, residents are urged to stay informed, exercise caution, and adhere to advisories issued by traffic police and disaster management authorities.
