A wave of alarm and uncertainty swept through Bengaluru's Akshayanagar area on Thursday afternoon as thick, ominous black smoke billowed into the sky, creating a scene of panic among residents. The incident, which occurred around 2 PM near HSR Layout Sector 2, immediately sparked fears of a gas cylinder explosion, sending ripples of concern across the bustling locality.

Eyewitnesses described a chilling sight: dense, sooty plumes rising high above apartment complexes, notably in the vicinity of DLF Newtown.

The sheer volume and dark colour of the smoke led many to believe a major industrial or domestic gas accident had taken place, causing widespread apprehension. Residents quickly took to social media, sharing videos and images of the unsettling spectacle, which further amplified the initial reports of a cylinder burst.

However, as emergency services swiftly converged on the scene, a clearer, albeit still somewhat conflicting, picture began to emerge.

Fire and Emergency Services personnel, arriving promptly with a fire tender, initiated an investigation. Their initial assessment suggested a different culprit: a large heap of garbage, potentially mixed with combustible materials like rubber and plastic, had caught fire.
