Bejoy Nambiar‑backed ‘Duet’ Becomes Spotify’s First Short‑Film Release

There’s something oddly poetic about a story about music finding its way out of silence on a platform that’s all about sound. That’s exactly what Sheetal Menon’s sophomore short film ‘Duet’ does, and it lands on Spotify on July 30 – the first time the streaming giant will host a short‑film.

The film stars Sidhant Gupta, who slips into the skin of a grieving pianist haunted by the sudden loss of his estranged brother during the global pandemic. Backed by acclaimed filmmaker Bejoy Nambiar and produced under the Getaway Pictures banner, ‘Duet’ was co‑written by Menon herself and Arpita Chatterjee.

When Menon talks about the film she says it “grew out of a very specific kind of grief… the isolation so many of us felt during the pandemic.” The narrative is simple yet haunting: the pianist’s solitary piano notes are answered by an unseen violin, a musical dialogue that becomes his lifeline, nudging him toward a fragile hope.

Gupta reflected on his role, noting, “I kept asking myself what it feels like when giving up seems easier than living another day… this story found me after ‘Jubilee’ and never let go.” His performance walks the line between despair and redemption, a journey he describes as moving “from the darkest moment to the kiss of light.”

Nambiar, who also serves as producer, called the project “a monumental labor of love.” He added, “In just her second film, Sheetal, alongside an incredible cast and crew, has pulled off something both deeply intimate and ambitiously cinematic.”

The film’s visual texture comes from cinematographer Siddharth Srinivasan, while editor Prakash Kurup stitches the pieces together with a rhythm that mirrors the music itself. Sound designer Moinak Bose crafts an immersive soundscape that feels almost tactile, and the original score by Sid Acharya weaves through the narrative, accented by global pieces like Eric Christian’s “Delusion III” and Ben Crosland’s “The Hourglass.” A violin solo by London‑based Tineke de Jong adds the final emotional sting.

Special appearances by Sayani Gupta and Puja Sarup pepper the short with brief, yet memorable moments. After its Spotify debut, ‘Duet’ will also be available on Getaway Pictures’ YouTube channel, giving viewers a second chance to experience the melancholic duet.
