BART train partially derails near Orinda, prompting station closures, delays

A BART train partially derailed and caught fire Monday morning near Orinda, prompting the closure of two stations and significant delays in the East Bay. The incident happened at 9:15 a.m. on the Yellow Line train to east Contra Costa County between Orinda and Lafayette, authorities said. As a result, service was halted in both directions in Orinda, and no estimate was given for when it might be restored.

No one was injured in the derailment, and all of the passengers on the train were off boarded and taken to the Orinda station. Two cars caught fire, and the Orinda Fire Department has since extinguished the flames. Both the Orinda and Lafayette stations were closed after the incident. As of 11:20 a.m., authorities were still working to establish a bus bridge for the affected area.

We are still gathering full details but this train is unable to move and passengers have off boarded the train. BART Police and Fire Dept are on the scene as well. — BART (@SFBART).
