Attack on Democracy: Congress Condemns Blast Outside Manipur Leader’s House

On the evening of September 3, a loud explosion rattled the neighbourhood of Yairipok Bishnu Naha in Thoubal district, Manipur. The blast struck the gate of the house belonging to Keisham Meghachandra Singh, the president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee and a sitting MLA from Wangkhem.

Witnesses said the sound was like a firecracker, but the aftermath revealed a small, grenade‑like device that had been detonated. Fortunately, none of the occupants were injured; the explosion merely damaged the outer wall and startled the residents.

In Imphal the next day, senior Congress spokesperson Hareshwar Goswami addressed reporters, describing the incident as “an attack on democracy.” He emphasized that in a democratic setup, disagreements must be settled through dialogue, not violence.

“We take the bomb blast at the residence of the Congress party leader as an attack on democracy. If there are different views, they should be negotiated and discussed peacefully,” Goswami said, adding that the party had not yet received any concrete information about who was behind the act.

The spokesperson hinted that “miscreants, possibly instigated by someone, may be responsible,” underscoring the need for a thorough investigation.

Police reports confirm that the incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. near the wall of the house. Officials suspect the device was a hand‑grenade, but the exact type and origin are still being examined.

While the blast did not result in injuries, the symbolic impact reverberated across the state’s political landscape. The Congress, already facing stiff competition from the ruling BJP, sees the episode as a worrying sign of escalating tension.

Manipur’s Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, who has been dealing with other security concerns, was not immediately available for comment. Meanwhile, the state’s law‑enforcement agencies have launched a probe and are reportedly tracking potential leads, including recent arrests linked to a separate incident at a petrol pump in Imphal West.

As the investigation unfolds, the Congress has urged the central and state governments to ensure swift justice and to reaffirm that democratic dissent must never be silenced through terror.
