Assam Floods 2026: Government on War‑Footing, BJP Mobilises Relief Teams

Heavy monsoon rains have turned the rivers of Assam into raging torrents, swamping large parts of Jorhat, Sivasagar and Charaideo. The situation is dire, and the state machinery has essentially gone into war‑footing mode.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is on the ground, monitoring every development and issuing directives to a slew of agencies – the Water Resources Department, Disaster Management Department, NDRF, SDRF, police, fire‑services, and even Indian Air Force helicopters. He has made it clear: no one should be allowed to relax until every stranded family gets help.

In an effort to keep the embankments from cracking under pressure, teams are working round the clock along the Jaji, Dikhow, Disang and Bhogdoi rivers. Sandbags are being piled, weak spots are being shored up, and any leaking sections are being sealed – a painstaking, labour‑intensive task that leaves little room for error.

What’s striking is the extra muscle the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has thrown in. Party workers, under the guidance of state president Dilip Saikia, have set up makeshift camps, distributed food packets, and helped evacuate residents to safer grounds. In the flood‑ravaged villages of Chantak and Garmur in Sivasagar’s Nazira constituency, more than a hundred BJYM volunteers have been on duty day and night, literally living out of tents to ensure aid reaches every doorstep.

On the political front, four senior ministers – Ajanta Neog, Bimal Bora, Sushanta Borgohain and Keshab Mahanta – were dispatched overnight to supervise relief and rehabilitation. Their presence has been a morale boost for locals, who see the administration’s commitment reflected in the rapid arrival of supplies and the steady flow of information.

State BJP spokesperson Ranjib Kumar Sarmah praised the “extraordinary commitment” of the administration, while also highlighting the party’s willingness to step in wherever needed. Even from New Delhi, Dilip Saikia has been in constant touch with district officials, tracking the progress of rescue ops and making sure the party’s volunteers are coordinated with official teams.

All told, the response is a blend of official machinery and grassroots activism. While the floodwaters continue to recede slowly, the combined effort of the government and the BJP is aimed at protecting lives, salvaging livelihoods and rebuilding what the rains have torn apart.
