ArtPort Gallery Finds a New Home in Downtown Halifax

When the lease at Halifax Stanfield International Airport expired, many assumed ArtPort Gallery would quietly disappear. Instead, the nonprofit turned the setback into a fresh start, signing a three‑year agreement for a historic storefront on Barrington Street.

The new venue, roughly 3,500 square feet, retains the building’s original brick façade while the interior has been gut‑renovated to create flexible, light‑filled galleries. "We wanted a space that feels like a living room for art," said gallery director Maya Singh, chuckling about the inevitable growing pains of moving boxes, canvases, and a way‑too‑large sculpture up the stairs.

ArtPort, founded in 2015, has long championed emerging Nova Scotian talent, staging pop‑ups, workshops, and artist talks. Relocating downtown means they can reach a broader audience – from office workers grabbing lunch to tourists strolling the waterfront.

The grand opening, slated for next Thursday, will feature a solo show by Halifax‑born painter Luis Cabrera, whose vibrant abstracts echo the city’s shifting skyline. Residents are invited to enjoy free admission, live music, and a chance to meet the creators.

While the airport space offered a steady stream of travelers, the downtown location promises something different: a community hub where art can be discussed over coffee, and where local stories find a home on the walls. "It's not just a move; it's an evolution," Singh added, smiling.
