Apple Hill Farms Kick Off Autumn with Sweet Treats and Blooming Gardens

When the air starts to turn crisp, Apple Hill in Placerville, California, comes alive with the scent of baked apples and the color of blooming petals. This Labor Day weekend, more than fifty family‑run farms opened their doors, inviting locals and travelers alike to soak up the early‑fall vibes.

At Apple Ridge Farms, the co‑owner Stephanie Maltby proudly explains that everything on their menu is crafted from apples harvested right there on their 16‑acre orchard. “We make everything with the apples we grow—from apple pie and donuts to cider and butter,” she says, wiping flour from her hands after a busy morning bake.

The farm’s orchard is a miniature museum of varieties, boasting sixteen different kinds of apples. Unfortunately, a late‑season frost forced the cancellation of the traditional U‑pick event this year, but the family hasn’t let that dampen the spirit.

Beyond the kitchen, the property is awash in color. “We have over 500,000 flowers in bloom right now, and they’ll stay vibrant until mid‑October,” Maltby notes, gesturing toward rows of dahlias, zinnias, and marigolds that stretch across the fields. It’s a perfect backdrop for a leisurely stroll or a family photo.

Visitors who come early in September are rewarded with shorter lines and more time to explore. “If you get here before the October rush, you can hop from farm to farm without feeling rushed,” Maltby advises. That tip proved useful for Polo Heysquierdo, a guest who drove up from Florida. “I’m here on a work trip, but I figured why not soak in the fresh mountain air and grab some BBQ while I’m at it,” he laughs.

The Apple Hill Growers Association says most of the ranches will stay open through the Sunday after Thanksgiving, giving a generous window for anyone who wants to taste fresh apple goodies, browse handmade crafts, or simply enjoy the scenery.
