Apple Hill farms kick off autumn with sweet treats and blooming flowers

As the evenings grow a little crisper and the leaves start to turn, Apple Hill in Placer County is humming with the start of autumn. Over the Labor Day weekend more than fifty farms opened their doors, each eager to share the flavors and colors of the season.

At Apple Ridge Farms, co‑owner Stephanie Maltbie proudly points to the orchard rows and the country store behind her. “We make everything with the apples we grow—pie, donuts, cider, even butter,” she says, her voice tinged with the pride of a family‑run operation. The 16‑acre farm boasts sixteen varieties of apples, though a late frost this year forced the cancelation of the traditional pick‑your‑own apples. Still, the farm’s kitchen is busy, whipping up fresh‑baked pies and gooey donuts that smell like fall in a single bite.

Beyond the baked goodies, Apple Ridge is laying out a different kind of spectacle: a flower trail. “We’ve got over 500,000 blossoms right now, and they’ll stay vivid until mid‑October,” Maltbie explains. She urges visitors to come early in the season, before the September crowds swell. “If you get here in September you’ll move through the farms more easily, see more, and enjoy a quieter experience than in October.”

The sentiment is echoed by travelers like Polo Heysquierdo, who drove up from Florida for a work trip. “I was looking forward to the BBQ, but the fresh mountain air and the scenery are a perfect bonus,” he remarks, soaking in the crisp breezes and the sprawling fields.

The Apple Hill Growers Association notes that most ranches will stay open through the Sunday after Thanksgiving, giving visitors plenty of time to sample apple ciders, pumpkin pies, and even handcrafted soaps. Their advice? Venture beyond a single farm—explore the patchwork of orchards, markets, and trails that make Apple Hill a true autumn destination.
