Anthropic rolls out Opus 5, its newest AI model promising higher efficiency at half the cost of its flagship
Anthropic’s Opus 5 model, a more affordable sibling of Fable 5, aims to handle office work and coding with better safety and lower price tags.
On Friday, San Francisco‑based Anthropic announced the launch of Opus 5, the latest addition to its Claude family of AI assistants. The company says the new model delivers roughly the same level of competence as its high‑end cousin, Fable 5, but at about half the price – a claim that could make a real dent in the way businesses and developers pick AI tools.
Opus 5 is essentially the next‑generation version of the earlier Opus 4.8, which debuted in May. While Opus 4.8 was already praised for its speed, the upgraded Opus 5 promises an extra boost in efficiency without sacrificing the kind of nuanced reasoning that made Claude popular for daily office chores and even light‑weight programming.
“We’re constantly pushing the frontier of intelligence while trying to keep it as accessible as possible,” said Dianne Penn, Anthropic’s product leader, in an interview with Reuters. She noted that the development cycle has been “pretty rapid,” and that each new generation is meant to be a step‑up in both capability and affordability.
From a safety standpoint, Anthropic says Opus 5 is deliberately less aggressive than Fable 5 when it comes to probing cyber‑security loopholes. In internal tests the model was less likely to be tricked into generating harmful content, meaning it can run with fewer safeguards than its more powerful sibling—something that could simplify integration for developers who have grown weary of over‑bearing guardrails.
When asked which model to choose, Penn recommended Opus 5 for “value‑driven, day‑to‑day tasks” like drafting emails, summarising documents, or assisting with routine code snippets. By contrast, she suggested Fable 5 for “multi‑day, highly autonomous projects” that demand deeper reasoning and larger context windows.
The launch also reignited conversation around “open‑weight” models—AI systems whose underlying weights can be downloaded, run locally, and customized by end users. Unlike proprietary offerings, these models give developers more freedom but also raise questions about security and intellectual‑property protection. Penn shrugged at the recent buzz surrounding China’s Moonshot Kimi K3, saying it’s “still too early to judge how open‑weight models will fare on complex real‑world problems.”
