Angels Hit Hard by Injuries: Schanuel and Meckler Land on Injured List

It's a tough break, truly, for the Los Angeles Angels, who've just announced that two of their key young players, first baseman Nolan Schanuel and outfielder Wade Meckler, are heading to the injured list. This unfortunate double whammy comes right after a series in Houston, leaving the team to scramble for replacements as they continue their season.

Let's talk about Nolan Schanuel first. He's been sidelined with a right intercostal muscle strain, that tricky muscle tucked between your ribs. The Angels have placed him on the 10-day injured list, with the move made retroactive to August 21st, 2026. Schanuel himself sounded pretty surprised by the injury, telling reporters he felt something in his last at-bat on Thursday and admitting, "it's like an intercostal strain... I've never had anything like that." This isn't his first stint on the IL this season, either; he also dealt with left ankle inflammation back in late May or early June. Manager Kurt Suzuki commented that Nolan had been "dealing with it a little bit" before they decided to be "precautionary" and give him time to heal properly. You never want to rush these things, especially with core muscles.

Then there's Wade Meckler, whose injury sounds particularly nasty. The outfielder has been placed on the 7-day concussion injured list, also retroactive to August 21st. Meckler was hit square near the right ear by a 90.6 mph sinker thrown by Astros reliever Bryan King during that fateful Thursday game. It was one of those scary moments on the field – he was motionless for a brief period before trainers helped him off. Seeing a player get hit like that is always jarring, and a concussion is certainly nothing to take lightly.

Naturally, with two roster spots suddenly open, the Angels wasted no time in making corresponding moves. They've recalled outfielder-catcher Gustavo Campero and infielder-outfielder Christian Moore from their Triple-A affiliate, Salt Lake. Both players will now get their shot at the big league level, hoping to make an impact while Schanuel and Meckler recover. The team was already without Vaughn Grissom, who's been playing first base, and Oswald Peraza at second, so these new injuries certainly don't help the depth chart.
