Andhra Pradesh rolls out 500 ‘Thalli‑Bidda Express’ vehicles to ferry mothers and newborns

In a move that blends compassion with logistics, the Andhra Pradesh government has announced the rollout of 500 specially‑crafted “Thalli‑Bidda Express” vehicles. These aren’t just any ambulances – they’re meant to whisk expectant mothers and their newborns from the farthest villages to the nearest hospitals, without any cost to the families.

The idea, championed by Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohamed Reddy, grew out of a simple observation: many rural women still struggle to reach a medical facility in time, especially during labour or emergencies. So the state decided to put a fleet of well‑equipped vans on every mandal road, ensuring that help is just a short ride away.

Each Thalli‑Bidda Express will sport a bright, easily recognisable livery – a friendly mix of orange and white – and will be stocked with a basic neonatal kit, a CGI‑approved oxygen cylinder, a blood pressure monitor, and even a small stretcher for delicate newborns. The vehicles are also fitted with GPS, so dispatchers can track them in real‑time and send the nearest unit when a call comes in.

Funding for the initiative comes from the state’s Health, Medical Education and Early Child Development (HMEECD) budget, meaning the service will be completely free for users. Families won’t have to worry about hidden fees or fuel charges; the government has taken care of everything, from driver salaries to vehicle maintenance.

Implementation will be phased. In the first wave, 250 vehicles are slated to hit the road within the next two months, covering the most underserved districts. The remaining 250 will follow by the end of the year, completing a network that reaches virtually every corner of Andhra Pradesh.

Medical experts have welcomed the scheme, noting that timely transport can shave precious minutes off the “golden hour” after birth – a period critical for preventing complications. “When you combine skilled birth attendants with rapid, safe transport, you dramatically improve survival odds for both mother and child,” said Dr. Anjali Reddy, a senior obstetrician at Kurnool Medical College.

While the rollout is still in its infancy, the government is already eyeing future upgrades: adding tele‑medicine kits, solar‑powered fridges for vaccines, and even a helpline that syncs directly with the vehicle’s GPS. For now, though, the focus remains on getting those 500 vans onto the road and building trust among the people who need them most.
