Amritsar's Unforeseen Deluge: A Canal Breach Floods Chatiwind Chowk Area

Well, Amritsar recently found itself in a bit of a watery predicament. Specifically, the area around Chatiwind Chowk experienced quite a sudden inundation when a canal decided to breach its banks, sending water spilling onto roads and, unfortunately, right into people's homes. It's the kind of unexpected event that can really turn a normal day upside down for local residents, transforming familiar streets into temporary canals.

The incident, which happened near Chatiwind village along the bustling Tarn Taran Road, unfolded as workers were engaged in some vital development work. You see, they were in the process of laying pipes by boring beneath the existing surface water canal. It sounds like a complex task, and sometimes, despite best intentions, things just don't go exactly to plan. In this instance, it seems the ground gave way, and the canal breached.

And when it did, the water surged with an unexpected force, quickly overwhelming the immediate surroundings. Roads became impassable, and water began to creep into residential areas, including parts of Kot Mitt Singh and even reaching towards the Sultanwind area. Naturally, local authorities wasted no time. Administration teams, complete with ADC and SDM officials, were on the scene swiftly. Their primary mission? To plug that pesky breach. They worked tirelessly, deploying countless soil-filled sacks, piling them strategically to try and staunch the flow. The idea, of course, was to lessen the pressure on the damaged section and prevent any further overflow into the already affected areas.

Inderbir Singh Nijjar, the Amritsar South MLA, quickly addressed the public, shedding light on the circumstances. He confirmed that the breach occurred directly during the pipe-laying process, explaining that the escaping water then made its way into the very pipelines they were installing, before sadly heading towards inhabited areas. While he offered a bit of reassurance, noting that no major damage had been reported at that point, he also wisely cautioned that a larger breach could have spelled far more significant losses.

Adding another perspective, Amritsar Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla shared his insights, suggesting that part of the problem might lie with older pipelines and passages. Specifically, he mentioned areas near the Kot Mitt Singh on Tarn Taran Road bridge and Sultanwind, theorizing that these older sections hadn't been properly closed or capped. He felt this oversight, coupled with soil removal during development, contributed to the water leakage. It's a common challenge in urban growth, isn't it – balancing new infrastructure with the aging systems beneath our feet.
