Alligator Bites Young Swimmer at Florida Preserve Despite Warning Signs

On Monday afternoon a frantic scene unfolded at Weeki Wachee Preserve in Hernando County, Florida. A young swimmer, whose name hasn’t been released, slipped into a part of the river that is officially marked as a no‑swim zone. Within moments, a massive alligator—estimated at nine to twelve feet long—latched onto his arm and leg, leaving deep puncture wounds.

Witnesses say the child was probably chasing a thrown toy when he fell into the water. A nearby boater spotted the reptile, shouted a warning, and tried to scare it off, but the animal was already latched on. Emergency responders arrived quickly, pulled the youngster out, and rushed him to a local hospital where doctors began treating the injuries.

County officials posted signs warning visitors that swimming is prohibited because of the alligators that call the preserve home.
