Alleged Sexual Assault at a University of Chicago Fraternity House Party

21‑year‑old woman says she was assaulted during an AEPi gathering in Hyde Park

Chicago police are probing an alleged sexual assault that happened early Sunday at the Lambda chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi’s house near the University of Chicago.

Chicago police opened an investigation on Sunday after a 21‑year‑old woman reported being sexually assaulted inside a fraternity house on South University Avenue. The house belongs to the Lambda chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi), a campus‑linked fraternity located just a short walk from the University of Chicago in Hyde Park.

According to the student‑run Chicago Maroon, the woman – who is not enrolled at the university – was at a party that began around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday. The alleged assault occurred at approximately 1:50 a.m., when the gathering was still in full swing. A fellow attendee stepped in, and a man fled the scene.

Witnesses later described the suspect as a South Asian male, about 5’ 7”, with short side hair, longer curly hair on top, dark complexion, and dressed in a black T‑shirt, black joggers and white sneakers.

University officials issued a community safety alert Sunday afternoon, urging students to stay clear of the house while the investigation continues. The AEPi national office confirmed the chapter is cooperating with both campus officials and the Chicago Police Department, and that the fraternity has been barred from hosting any events until the case is resolved.

“Most importantly, all of AEPi hurts for the person who was the victim in this incident,” a spokesperson told the Maroon. “No one should attend an event on any campus — fraternity‑based or otherwise — and have to fear for their safety and wellbeing.”
